Community Connection: Ovarian Cancer Canada is looking for volunteers! Could you help?

OVdialogue – consider joining our team in the role of Community Champion. Over a few hours each week, you would be part of a team that helps connect people, support conversations and are thought leaders for OVdialogue. This is your opportunity to give back to those who have/continue to support you through the tough times, share your unique experiences, and help celebrate successes. For more details of what this entails, please reach out to @Mfallis (mfallis@ovariancanada.org).
Ovarian Cancer Canada is thrilled to share that we have some exciting updates on the way for OVdialogue. These enhancements are designed to strengthen our community and make your experience even better.

Stay tuned for more details, and feel free to share your thoughts below. Let’s make this community even stronger!

Lets all do out part so we can enjoy a summer with friends and family again.
  • @CountryLiving, @Fearless - Vol Mod, @Rad I'm sure we're all tired of staying home but it's our reality. I've now started double masking.

So hard, fortunately our numbers are coming down here in Waterloo region but still. I don't see any type of gathering place in my future...unless you classify the cancer centre as one...LOL!
  • @Readersmaven
Just edited the title. Hopefully that might draw out some comments.  Did you check the By Your Side booklet...I can't recall but maybe it has some info on Radiation as a treatment that might be useful.

    @CountryLiving
I am in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox @ Addington and Prince Edward County regions, all of which went back to green status yesterday and none of which have posted any significant numbers or outbreaks since the start of Covid last year. We are also a high traffic tourist area.  We've continuously achieved our success by just following the recommendations...mask at all times, safe distancing, and continuous sanitizing...and no gatherings larger than the recommended sizes.
  • @Readersmaven, you are right their is not much we can do.I have not been inside of a grocery store since I started chemo in October. Because of where I live I don't think we will go back to normal for a while.

I dont mind being home at all however I miss hugging my family members who are not part of my household. Being home I have had time to experiment with baking and cooking more, had time to read, time to connect with my household members and playing board games more, going for walks with my husband and enjoying the time to watch sport games on the TV with my one son who is home. I empathize with my 98 yo mother who is alone in a retirement home 4 hours away. However staying home gives me the time to have many calls a day to chit chat with her. Before covid I barely found time to call her every other day. Covid has given me this time. I can complain of what I dont have or be thankful for all my blessings
  • I do find it amusing that our region is getting lower shipments of the vaccines than other areas of Ontario so we're way behind in vaccinating folks here. They haven't even finished the long term care homes yet.  Apparently because our case numbers have been so low they feel we don't need it as urgently as other areas of Ontario. Something wrong with logic that says you get penalized for doing all the right things !  That said, I doubt my oncologist will approve my being vaccinated until I'm through chemo anyway.

@Fearless - Vol Mod I hear ya! My mother lives in Brockville and they just got their first vaccine yesterday. Yet Halton region and many homes in Waterloo region have had their second vaccines...
  • @CountryLiving well said! It's all about perspective, we get to choose how we respond to current situation, whether that's covid or cancer related.

I listened to a mindfulness webinar last week at that was a key point.  Not new but a great reminder, at least for me.
  • Great perspective @CountryLiving....I guess like the adage if you get a lemon, make lemonade.  You've sure done that well. I agree, Covid in some ways has really changed my own priorities about how I spend my time.  And like you, newly rediscovering things I enjoy that I never seemed to have time for anymore.

  • Must admit I 'm so jealous when I see FB posts from family and friends in the US....my bestie in Dallas just got her first shot; my cousin in Venice Florida is set up for her and her husbands boosters this week...even my stepson and his wife in Florida are scheduled for theirs.  Then again, it seems to be going much more smoothly and rapidly in Alberta where my son lives.
  • @Fearless - Vol Mod I was heartened to hear that cancer patients, in ON, would be part of Phase 2, in line for shots in March. Fingers crossed that's the case.
  • My daughter who is a registered nurse got both of her shots, last one finished 2 weeks ago.

Enjoy the long weekend ladies and have a Happy Valentines Day! Talk with you all again next week.
  • @Readersmaven
I was told by my cancer center that they are all lobbying the government for special consideration in the roll out.  That would be nice if they succeed, although not sure what that would mean.  All we can do is wait, and do our best to stay healthy. I'll be damned if, after all the challenges I continue to face with the cancer, that I'm going let Covid get me!!!!!  I'm sure you're all the same.
  • Wherever you are, enjoy the coming days, happy valentine's day and family day! Chat again next week.
  • Have a great weekend ladies and stay safe!
  • Well ladies, after 2 and time to sign off. Thanks for being with us today.  Hope you'll all register for the Zoom on clinical trials in two weeks. Look for that communication from OCC on Tuesday.  And in the meantime, Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Family Day...two more occasions where our resourcefulness support celebrating....virtual hugs always a great way to start..... <3<3<3
  • Thursday February 18 ......WELCOME to today’s live chat.

Should be great fun today ....as I type this I’m on the midst of a large scale internet outage with no ETA on the fix. So as we begin today it seems I’m relegated to using cellular data and my wee iPhone screen and keyboard. So don’t fault me for being slow, typos, or autocorrect making me say something inappropriate 😂

Just coming up to 1pm, so let’s get started.....

  • Wow.  Sorry about your power outage.  I hope you have an alternate source of heat in your home.
I have missed the last couple of weeks.  How are you doing @Fearless - Vol Mod

  • Hi All,

Obviously something it's going on,  our internet crashed earlier this week and we won't have a fix until tomorrow... very frustrating. So I'm currently at my daughter's house using their internet do I can download some movies and audiobooks.
  • Hello Ladies.  I'm not quite sure what to do on this live chat but I'm sure I'll figure it out.
  • Wow @Readersmaven .  Sorry you guys are having so many techno-difficulties

  • @Annie1950 - you are doing it.  Read...respond when you want.  Start a new topic....Refresh your screen often so it updates

  • There's few things in this world more aggravating than technological issues.  They always happen when there's a time frame involved:)
  • @Annie1950 welcome! Mostly chat is a free flow of great support!
@KarenBemi thx!  It's frightening how dependent we are on internet. We "cut" our cable couple of years ago and rely on internet for news and entertainment. So we've had to be creative!
  • @KarenBemi and @Readersmaven happy to see you both today. @Annie1950 welcome to your first visit. Glad to have you join us. You’ll eventually get used to the platform. It’s a bit slow and awkward but we’re working on some technology upgrades to hat should improve functionality. If you want to make sure a particular member sees your post just type @ immediately followed by their screen name. Tell us what other challenges you might have and one of us will try to talk you through.
  • So here's my latest update...I spoke to radiologist last Thursday. Plan is to undergo 5 high dose treatments to try to shrink lymph node.

I'm now waiting for a call with a time for appointment to gave covid test and mapping for radiation. Once again my patience is being tested as I wait...LOL!
  • @Readersmaven, I don't think I will ever be able to "Cut" the cable.  I wish I could.  But...
I work in construction and I remember one day, we had a HUGE tender closing and we had a major power outage in our building...just our building...it was in spring...sunny day...no reason for the power to be out but it was.  We had to use generators to keep our computers running and our cell phonse so we could close the tender.  It was insane.
