"Understanding Biomarkers in Ovarian Cancer" Speaker Series webinar - thoughts

    Hi everyone,

Did anyone else attend the Speaker Series webinar last night? What were your key takeaways or learning?

From my vantage point, I thought it was very good. It was recorded and will be made available once ready. The speakers (presenters) did a very good job of simplifying and explaining what biomarkers are and their role in our diagnosis and treatment. As well, there were some case study reviews which were helpful to understand how biomarkers are used in a tangible way. It was also nice to hear from one of our own Teal Sisters who shared her experience with biomarkers. Lastly, Dr. Alison Ross, OCC Director of Knowledge Mobilization @Ali_OCC previewed a one pager on understanding Biomarkers which she will be sharing with us soon. It's a similar resource to the one she recently shared on HRD testing.

I did ask from a curiosity perspective, how long a tissue sample is preserved from a biopsy or resection. Apparently most hospitals preserve at least one sample from each specimen in the event future testing is needed. Someone asked if that was the case for someone whose sample was taken 5 years ago and they said in most cases, yes it should still be preserved. The caveat is that the sample needs to still be "large enough" for them to use for testing e.g., there's still enough there for them to take and do secondary testing with. It's something to discuss with your medical team, if relevant.

If you were not able to attend last night, the "Libraries" tab at the top of this page is the place to go if you are looking for past Speaker Series items. The most recent, "HRD Testing - What Patients Need to Know" is there as an example plus many others. You can browse through them all OR they have been classified into main categories on the left side of the page.

After the session, I felt that I had more information to add to my knowledge toolkit. Thank you OCC for providing this opportunity.
