  • 1.  Pleural Effusion Question

    Posted yesterday
    Hi there
    Hoping everyone is well. I'm wondering if anyone has any information and/or experience with the Pleurodesis surgical procedure to treat pleural effusion. I'm about to have my second chest catheter installed and  have just learned of this surgical procedure. From what I've read the upfront recovery is a bit challenging but spares you from having a chest catheter for a few months during chemo. Any insights most appreciated, thanks, Jill

    @jbirch

    Hi. My understanding is that the pleurodesis procedure is a permanent solution for recurring pleural effusions. I have not had the procedure (YET) but it is going to be my next step for controlling pleural effusions in the future. I have only read up on it and have not spoken to my respirologist about it yet.

    Honestly, at this stage of my journey, I wish I had the procedure when my pleural effusions started a few months ago instead of going through all the drains and then catheter install. Right now, my chemo seems to be keeping it under control.

    Please keep us posted and let us know what you decide…either way and why. I know I would like to hear more about the procedure other than what I've read on Dr Google 😁.

    @jbirch thank you for your post and question. I don't have any personal experience on this topic however if you haven't already done so, a search for "pleural effusions" via the search bar at the top of this page will reveal a number of former threads on this topic. Perhaps there is some information in there that may be of use.

    As you progress, if you glean information on this topic that you feel others may benefit from, please continue to share on this forum. Sometimes your question is the first time the item has been posted and there may be others who could learn from you. All knowledge is helpful to this group of warriors. Thank you and wishing you luck as you explore this procedure.
