  • 1.  Oncology Gynecologist Recommendations in Ontario or BC?

    Posted 27 days ago

    Hello!

Does anyone have good oncology gynecologist recommendations for Ontario or BC?

Recently received biopsy results that indicate atypical endometrial hyperplasia but I am having trouble finding an actual oncology gynecologist with expertise in this area.

Thank you for your help in advance,

    Jennifer

    @JJS

'hello, a few questions….1) who did the biopsy?  Could they not refer you to the proper gyne onco?  2) do you have a gyne?  That they would refer you or a GP?  In BC  I was referred by a gyne to  the BCCA  in Vancouver where the gyne onco has clinics and that's how I was connected.  I would think that they would know about atypical endo hyperplasia.  I did hear from my onco too that there is a sexual health program as well to help with hormonal replacement and such if needed.  Not sure if that helps.

This is super helpful! Thank you! Yes, I have both a GP and a gynecologist in Vancouver but they both seem totally disconnected from oncology gynecologists for some strange reason.

Both my GP and my gynecologist (who specializes in obstetrics, not oncology) seem confused about who to contact, and neither seems to have contacts in oncology.

Also, my gynecologist doesn't seem open to any ideas - about anything - except her own.

For the past two years I have been trying to ask her about my strange bleeding symptoms, and she simply told me to take pills to stop the bleeding / stop the symptoms. She did not inquire further, or help to investigate possible causes for bleeding symptoms.

Now my gynecologist just wants to operate! Again, no discussion about my concerns. And no discussion about whether it might be wise to investigate further to try to ascertain and clarify whether I am precancerous or have actual cancer cells.

Just trying to stay calm, but feeling very lost and overwhelmed. Thank you for your support, which is so helpful and greatly appreciated!

@JJS refer to gyne onco thru VGH first, I believe there are 2 clinics one deals with colposcopy stuff( don't mind my spelling). And there is a complex gyne onco clinic, which is what I went thru.  I was then transferred over to a  BCCA file.  Once a referral is sent in I would also suggest following up to the gyne clinic at VGH with a phone call to make sure they got the referral.

Hi @JJS I apologize as I posted my response to the other thread you were on and just saw this one. So I'm copying below the information from the other thread that relates to this topic. I hope it's of help (and also glad to see other BC Teal Warriors I tagged have already engaged. That's what's amazing with this group).

"While I not an expert in this area, I did a quick google search and it sounds like your GP and/or your specialist can make a referral on your behalf to a specialist in another province. There are a number of places you could request a referral to however the two that come to mind are Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) and Juravinski Cancer Centre (Hamilton). If you google both you will find sections that detail the process your doctor would take for a referral. When my GP did my referral I was assigned to a member of the PMH gynecological oncology team. I didn't choose/request a specific doctor however I don't know whether that is an option. I just wanted you to know the process I went through. There may be other places for referral however those are two I'm most familiar with. Some others in this forum may have other referral suggestions.

I do know there are a few individuals in this forum who live in BC and have experience with the oncology/gynecology system there. Perhaps they can lend some advise and counsel to you in terms of their experience navigating the system. @Meinvan @LeslieA if you have anything to share please feel free."

Please keep us posted on your journey. We are here for you. 🩵

It looks like Jennifer received some great ideas regarding an oncology/gynaecologist in BC or Ontario. It got me thinking about my situation on Vancouver Island, and I do not have an oncology/ gynaecologist because I live in a small town where there are none. I didn't even know to ask about a referral to a doctor in Victoria. I have a gynaecologist who initially examined me before my diagnosis and I will see him next week for a follow up. I imagine he will be looking for irregularities and reporting to the oncologist in Victoria. This system is not as streamlined as it seems to be in Ontario or even Alberta.

I really appreciate the information-sharing from our teal sisters. I have learned more here than anywhere else.

Hi Jennifer, I'm in Ontario as well, and I have an oncologist/gynocologist/surgeon at Juravinski in Hamilton. Her name is Dr. Andra Nica, I'm not sure if she would specialize in endometrial hyperplasia, but her office may be able to redirect you if not. Good luck!

Hi @JJS I hope you've been able to get the referral to you to a gyne oncologist. If not, I found this information on the OCC website. It may be of help:
