  • 1.  bowel obstruction

    Hello, Teal Sisters!

I'm excited to see this new format of OVdialogue.  I'm writing because I recently had a partial bowel obstruction. I had my cancer surgery in September 2023, and I had no idea that a later obstruction was a possibility.  My oncologist said that the obstruction could happen again, or it could be a one-off. Now I'm really anxious about traveling in case it happens again. I read some really helpful posts by Strongwoman and others about their experiences with obstructions.  Have any of you had just one partial obstruction?

    Thanks,

    FrogProf

Good morning@FrogProf I'm afraid I am having a bit of a hard time with this new format.  It keeps asking me to sign in and then I am unable to respond to posts.  I'm not sure what I did to get here, lol.  I have a partial bowel obstruction due to a mass that they deemed to dangerous to remove when I had my surgery last March.  I think the key to preventing issues is diet.  I have no problems as long as I stick to a low fibre diet.  I wish@Strongwoman was around as she is so knowledgeable about this issue.  I

    Thanks, @JoanEG

I also have Crohn's, so the fiber balance can be tricky for me.

I'm glad you were able to figure out the new OvDialoge.

    Hi FrogProf,

I had the same thing happen to me last spring, when I had a partial bowel obstruction.  It makes it hard to travel because of the fear of it happen again, so I have been traveling only in Canada since then. I also asked my doctors to give me the medications I would need if I had another episode, so I have all the meds they gave me at the hospital (in pill forms) so I can treat myself.

Since then, I have had a few other episodes, with abdominal pains and vomiting, I take my meds as long as I can keep everything down, but when and if the vomiting starts, I have to go to emergency to get IV meds...so it is not perfect!

Best of luck with you ❤️

    Hello, Sylviequebecbc

Thanks for your reply.  Do you mind sharing what medications you take when you have these episodes? I have a phone appointment with my oncologist next week and am wondering whether they're worth discussing with her.

Good luck to you, too! No one should have to go through the misery of an NG tube.
