Proactive choices: Preventing hereditary breast and ovarian cancer

For those living with or at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer due to BRCA or other genetic mutations, the decision to undergo preventative surgery is deeply personal and often complex.

The information session is presented in partnership with Rethink Breast Cancer and features the clinical expertise of Dr. Michelle Jacobson, OB/GYN and menopause specialist, alongside people with lived experiences with ovarian cancer or breast cancer who chose preventative surgery to reduce their future cancer risk.

Together, they explore the latest medical recommendations and personal decision-making around risk-reducing procedures like salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of tubes and ovaries), including options for staged approaches.

You’ll gain insights into:
• How BRCA and other high-risk mutations impact cancer risk and screening
• Statistical likelihood of developing a second primary cancer
• When to consider preventative surgery and what to know first
• Emotional, physical, and fertility-related impacts of surgery
• What real patients wish they had known before making their decisions

This video offers essential guidance whether you're a patient, caregiver, family member, or healthcare provider. We’re committed to empowering our community to make informed, compassionate choices while navigating hereditary cancer risk.

This session was presented with the support of Abbvie.
